In some games, we see that some characters are made as a silent protagonist. They can, of course, telling pain, exhausted, and stuff like that. However, when interacting with others, they did say nothing at all. Some characters are made for this and some become popular because of that. Link from Legend of Zelda series, for example, he's one of the famous characters who never speak in game. They just want to get the job done quickly or maybe they are suffering damage. Alcatraz from Crysis, for example, he can't talk due to damage on his throat before Prophet save him.
How Silent Protagonist is made and how they become popular
Link, Gordon Freeman, JD Rookie, they become popular in their own series. Half-Life become popular because of Gordon Freeman, Halo series noted JD Rookie is the only character that never speaks through the game. In Legend of Zelda, Link's personality mainly told by those who once saved or assisted by him. Many possibilities can expect when developer make the game with a silent protagonist. Mostly, either they don't want to hire a voice actor or maybe they intend to make the game with a character that goes as a silent protagonist. Creating this game is not as simple as for the main protagonist that can speak throughout the game. Master Chief John-117 for example, he only speaks when necessary while most of the time, he stay silent. Some character can be made from originally can speak but in-game, they cannot. Alcatraz from Crysis and Morgan Yu from Prey are an example for that. Alcatraz suffers throat and multiple injuries and he was saved thanks to the effort of the prophet. Morgan Yu originally can speak, however, during Talos I Space Station outbreak, he never says anything, much like becoming silent protagonist for the game itself. Morgan Yu's reason for unable of speaking is revealed because of his brother, Alex Yu injects Morgan's cells to a Typhon creature. If there are any silent protagonist game, which one you want to see next? -
