To further reduce plastic waste, the resort uses an on-site bottling system powered by Nordaq technology. Every villa is fitted with smart controls and occupancy sensors to regulate lighting and air-conditioning based on guest presence. When a villa is unoccupied, energy use automatically decreases, and rooms are pre-cooled before check-in to a consistent temperature of 23°C. The resort has set measurable targets for further progress, including a 20% reduction in total energy consumption by 2026.
Waste Reduction and Responsible Supply Chains
Viceroy Bali’s approach to waste management integrates both high technology and local collaboration. The resort operates a comprehensive waste separation system to distinguish organic from non-organic materials, and all kitchen operations are designed to minimise food waste.
An on-site organic garden supplies fresh produce to the restaurant and bar. Food scraps are composted, and organic waste is repurposed as fertiliser for the garden, completing a full-circle process. The kitchen team actively experiments with fermentation, pickling, and dehydration to ensure that every ingredient is used to its full potential.
Used cooking oil is collected by partner company Noovoleum, which transforms it into renewable fuel while funding local educational initiatives. Plastic straws have been eliminated across all outlets, and the resort’s procurement strategy prioritises suppliers who reduce plastic packaging and support ethical production standards.
Guest Experience Meets Green Technology
For Viceroy Bali, sustainability is not limited to behind-the-scenes operations — it forms part of the guest experience. Visitors are subtly introduced to sustainable practices through in-villa amenities, refillable bottles, and optional linen programs that reduce unnecessary laundry.
Recycled materials also feature prominently in the resort’s design and retail offerings. Glassware created from upcycled materials by local artisans under the Bali Sama Sama brand is used throughout the property, illustrating how luxury and craftsmanship can coexist with sustainability.
