In the future, machine will take your job and AI will try to get into your brain— sooner than you think. Historian Yuval Noah Harari (author of Sapiens, Homo Deus, and, now, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century) explains why the best preparation has nothing to do with learning to code or become a doomsday prepper. Technology innovation and artificial intelligence will be growing significantly to the point where we still cannot comprehend. The best defense against that? Yuval Noah Harari explained it and we are going to summarize those thoughts in here. So what’s the best course of action? Unless you are 80 years old or something, you will have to repeatedly reinvent yourself in the coming decades. In 2025, 60% of the jobs will be taken over. And then we have a couple of rough years in which people have to adjust, and new jobs appear, and some people don't find new jobs and you have a large problem of unemployment. But then eventually things settle down into some new equilibrium, and we enter a new kind of economy. As individuals, what we can do is quite limited. If you are very rich and successful, then of course you have all the resources in the world to anticipate against these kinds of changes. But if you're an average person then you will need a lot of help. The hardest challenges will be psychological. Even if there is a new job, and even if you get opportunity from the government to kind of retrain yourself, you need a lot of mental flexibility to manage these transitions. How to build a more flexible mind to comprehend with it? There are a lot of ways to do that. For example meditation or go somewhere for a vacation. But it could be different for other people. Some people go hiking to tranquil their mind, or do sport. So it is really personal. But don’t forget about the goal: we need to get to know ourselves better and we need to create this mental flexibility. This is really the most important trait or skill to just survive the changes in the future. Our relationship with technology can be described by our smartphone. Our attention is one of the most important resources we have, and our smartphone keeps trying to attract our attention. There’s always something interesting in it. Sometimes happens when you open your smartphone because you have a little time to spare in the weekend so you just start browsing randomly through YouTube. Two hours later, you’re still there watching all types of cat videos, memes, and so on. Before that you did not say to yourself, “Okay, I am going to spend the next two hours watching these videos.” Technology kind of dictated your activities by grabbing your attention forcefully that it can kind of manipulate you. It’s not such a big secret. The way to grab people’s attention is by tickling their emotions, either through things like fear, anger, or things like gluttony and craving. You will feel this irresistible urge to click on some news that triggers your emotion. It grabs your attention because of this weakness. The most important investment that people can make is not to learn a particular skill. No, the most important investment is really in building this more flexible mind or personality. The better you know yourself, the more protected you are from these manipulating algorithms. You just need to just recognize it, then you can be a bit more protected from these kinds of manipulations.
